a history of the Genealogical Society of Victoria

As readers follow the time line of the Society's development in the chapters of this history, they will be better able to understand how the Society was formed, the various demands that had to be met and the number of hard working members who have given a great deal of their time, to ensure that the Society developed to its present day position as one of the largest and best family history/genealogical societies in Australia ...

The Society has moved from a handful of people who came together in 1941 to start the Society, to an organisation of approximately 6,700 members in 2001. During its development the service provided to members moved from a small cadre of volunteers to the employment of staff to assist the growing needs of the Society ...

Barefoot & Pregnant? Irish famine orphans in Australia volume 2

"Their homes broken and their parents dead, the adolescent Irish orphan girls sent to Australia, at the time of the Great Famine faced new hardships when they arrived. Maligned as "useless trollops", "barefoot little country beggars", "easily given to the gratification of their desires", they battled to carve a new life for themselves in the city and the bush.

This collection of documents allows the reader to decide if they were wrongfully condemned from the outset. The register of all orphans who came to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart proves to be an essential reference tool for family historians and anyone interested in the migration of Irish females.

ALL SOLD OUT  see Victorian Goldfields Hospital Index on CD

Hospital records are useful in tracing elusive forebears as they contain a wealth of information of interest to the family historian. The older hospital records, unlike their modern counterparts, list some surprising facts, which today would be regarded as useless and unnecessary. Maryborough and District Hospital, chose to include length of stay in colonies, the ship travelled to Australia and sometimes the number and ages of children, to their records of inpatients.
    A List of abbreviations used.
    Example:
Abel, Elizabeth DA12.10.1865, 36, of Tarnagulla. PE Liverpool, ship Slatley, IC 18 yrs, single, Religion.Wes.
