This will be an educational seminar on Scottish housing from medieval times down to 1900
Presentations from a number of speakers will include:
From wattle and daub, roof trees, thatch and other materials near at hand to stone, timber-frames and shingles, from duns and crannogs to summer shielings, from cottouns and farmtouns to apartment living in the burghs, learn about the housing of the lower and middle strata of Scottish society.
From timber-frames to mortared masonry, from turf, shingles and thatch to slates and tiles, from dirt and dung to carpets and linoleum, from solars to dormers, from forestairs to grand stairs, explore the changes in Scottish housing of the lower and middle tiers of Scottish society.
From castles, towers and bastle houses to the manor house, from spartan fortification to style, taste and creature comfort, from barrel-vaulted ceilings to proportion, stucco and the architectural orders, from rubble-filled and coursed rubble walls to quoining, ashlar blocks and pointed walls, gain an insight into the residences of the Scottish elite.
Tap into some of the resources that are available in the GSV Library and on the internet that describe the housing and living conditions of the Scottish population, by time, by place and according to economic status.
Places are limited and bookings are essential. Payment is required with bookings, through the GSV Reception desk or GSV online shop
Cost is $30 for GSV and/or Scottish Ancestry Group members. (Note: this seminar is not open to non-members).
