RESEARCH AT THE GSV Our extensive collection of reference material is housed in a pleasant, air conditioned research centre. Since the GSV was founded in 1941 it has accumulated a vast collection of records covering Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland and other countries and free Internet access increases the range. The Library holds over 25,000 titles, including books, microfiche, microfilms, CDs and computer databases, also pamphlets, maps and periodicals. Records include birth, death and marriage indexes and registers, passenger lists, census, cemetery, probate, occupations, convicts, family histories, local histories, directories, and much more. To check our extensive holdings select the relevant link. Members Online Resources which include the full library catalogue - login at right The extensive world-wide resources of the library include free use of subscription sites Ancestry, Findmypast, British Origins and Burke's Peerage Online. We are also an agency for viewing original records microfilmed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Click here for further details. Our aim is to help you trace your ancestors. We have a team of volunteer research assistants to guide your research in the library, from the casual query to a personalised discussion with an experienced genealogist. They will provide an introduction to the operation and layout of the library, help with planning your family history research and guidance with using and understanding the library collection and resources. The GSV library is open to GSV members, visitors are welcome for a daily member fee. Unable to visit our library? If unable to conduct your own research, our Research Service undertakes research within the society's library. Members are offered some free research options, see eResearch options. |
