The New Poor Law of 1834 was squarely aimed at driving down the cost of relief for the poor. New purpose-built workhouses would contain and control the poor thoughout the United Kingdom. The workhouse was so repellent that only those who lacked the moral determination to survive outside would be prepared to accept relief from the workhouse.
This talk will introduce you to the range of resources to help you research and understand the impact of the New Poor Law on your ancestors' lives.
