Convicts and Transportation c/w Vic-Tas Discussion Circle
Using Digital Data to Reconstruct Convict Lives
Digital History Tasmania, a not-for-profit organisation established in 2021, manages over 2.5 million digitised Tasmanian historical records. This includes a large swathe of Tasmania’s UNESCO Memory of the World registered convict archive. Hamish Maxwell-Stewart, a Professor of Heritage and Digital Humanities at the University of Tasmania, will explain how these records have been made digitally accessible as well as the elaborate process of cleaning, coding and linking them so that they can be mapped and analysed. He will explain ways in which Family historians and other researchers can access the database and contribute to this ongoing, internationally important project.
A combined discussion circle between the Convicts and Transportation Circle and the Victoria/Tasmania Circle.
Presented via Zoom.
