German Research Day (Morning)

Unlock Your German Heritage at the GSV

Are you tracing ancestors from Germany or German-speaking regions of Europe? Join us at the Genealogical Society of Victoria for a dedicated German Research Day. Whether you are just beginning to look for your immigrant ancestors' "Heimat" (hometown) or you are trying to break through a long-standing "brick wall," this session is designed to help you navigate the GSV’s specialised resources.

What We Will Cover

  • Navigating the GSV Catalogue: Learn how to find German family histories, manuscripts and indexes unique to our collection.
  • German-Australian Records: Explore shipping lists, naturalisation records and church indexes specifically relevant to German arrivals in Victoria.
  • Mapping the Homeland: Get hands-on help using maps to pinpoint exactly where your ancestors lived before they emigrated.
  • Expert Research Tips: Discuss German naming conventions, phonetic spelling variations in Australian records and how to identify old German script.

To help our volunteers provide the most relevant guidance, please submit an outline of your query to libraryadmin@gsv.org.au. This allows us to identify helpful resources in the GSV collection prior to your arrival.
