Early Land Sales in Melbourne
Robert Hoddle and the Early Land Sales in Melbourne
On 1 June 1837 Robert Hoddle began auctioning the newly-surveyed land allotments which are now in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Dr Liz Rushen has extensively researched Hoddle’s survey and the people who purchased the allotments. She will talk about her research, the lives and aspirations of the purchasers, and how some of these allotments have evolved over time. Dr Rushen’s exhibition ‘The Hoddle Grid: The Great Land Grab” may be viewed by visiting the Royal Historical Society of Victoria’s premises on weekdays at 239 A’Beckett Street, Melbourne.
