Britain’s involvement in the slave trade was extensive, complex and long-lasting. But what does this history have to do with family historians researching their British ancestors?

Join the England and Wales Discussion Circle on Zoom to explore Britain and the Slave Trade on Friday 23 October at 1.30pm. Please note the different time and date.

This is a huge topic, but the presentation will focus on the what, when and how of British involvement, and, importantly for genealogists, the records that can help uncover connections between our ancestors and slavery.

What might you find about an ancestor who was an enslaver, merchant, investor or otherwise connected with the trade? What records survive about enslaved people and their enslavers? And what can the records of compensation following abolition reveal?

The presentation will look at the sources available to family historians, including records held by The National Archives. There will also be an opportunity to hear about the speaker’s own family research, including how DNA results have contributed.

With millions of records becoming increasingly accessible, this is an area of research that may reveal unexpected connections and add another dimension to the stories of our British ancestors.

This is part of our Discussion Circle program so is for members only and free as part of your membership. Please log in to register and a Zoom link will be emailed to you. Go to What’s On? > Events.
